Foreign movies have often been my personal praise of late for many reasons, but one simple reason. America has not forgotten how to “do it”, but has simply put money over artistry and quality. Too many directors have opted for the easy way out or the “bad” way out in cases. Making movies so bland and atrocious that however still appeal to the billions of brainless tweens. PG-13 is an extremely common trend all of a sudden, which wasn’t the case even 5 years ago. And that is why foreign movies were and are a treat and forever will be a treat. They are most all rich in detail, artistry and thick in general and do not scale down anything to fit the MPAA. Fuck America!!!
Anyway the movie in question is “Let The Right One In”. This Swedish produced film has swept America by surprise proclaiming to be the “Best Vampire Movie. Ever.” Directed by Tomas Alfredson, Let The Right One In starts out soft and is pretty much the tone of the movie throughout. It is a gory movie, no doubt, however it balances it’s sections very nice. As a viewer I felt more compelled than shocked because I was so tied into the story and the characters. Foreign films always have wonderful character development, not to profile the countries into one group, but they just all do.
Great acting severely boosts the character development in this movie. The young boy and young vampire are played so well, and to think they are only about 12-15 years old. All the acting is well done. The only thing that threw me off was one of the voices they dubbed in for a Swedish speaking actor’s character that I thought was just over the top and plain strange, but it didn’t hurt a thing.
The effects are done well despite the use of CGI, ugh. I hate CGI.
Overall this movie is my top praise of 2009 so far. A good start to a once in a while hopeful year for film. It is a great atmospheric ride through a much needed alternate look into the vampire sub-genre. I really appreciated it. I had netflixed it and decided on buying it today. It’s just one of those films you enjoy watching over and over again for no reason. It takes you to another world and just makes you happy. I don’t know why, but it just does. BUY IT!!!
